Usually, it’s hard for me to write and listen to music, especially music with lyrics. I get so distracted by the words and the memories or ideas they bring to mind, that it’s easier for me to listen to nature sounds. As I was writing, I began realizing that songs helped me connect to the emotions I wanted the characters to feel, and I found it more inspiring to write with those feelings. I just needed to figure out how to tune out the words. The best way for me to do this is to listen to the same song on repeat until it becomes background music. I think I get used to the same rhythm of the song, the way the nature recordings have a loop. There are moments when I wonder if I’m crazy listening to the same song for at least an hour, but it seems to work!

Now whenever I hear these songs, they immediately trigger my book; it’s a strange feeling:
